Developing “Feel” & “Connection”

“Your arms and hands, from the shoulder joints to the tips of the fingers and through the reins, belong to the horse.” Sally Swift

As my Cheval Canadian Riley and I prepare for our first Western Dressage show I am reminded of the above quote from friend, mentor and founder of Centered Riding, the late Ms. Sally Swift. I know that being a student myself enhances my abilities as an instructor and clinician. I study with a couple different riding instructors, practice Tai Chi and attend a Body Awareness/Yoga class to help me be the best rider I can be. However, there is always more to do.

When I’m in a lesson I am reminded that riding is like tapping your head and rubbing your belly, on steroids! Different body parts must be doing different things all at the same time, and all without disturbing the horse. Using Sally’s Centered Riding exercises, analogies and techniques helps improve our sensitivity, feel and understanding of connection. Our goal is developing a soft, clear connection with our horse while exchanging energies, both giving and receiving. Small changes can drastically impact the message and the feel that goes through to the horse. As riders we need to focus on our mental, physical and emotional state. Being mindful about our balance, our clear intent and carrying ourselves, then we can complete the pretty picture with subtle support through our hands. Riders of all levels and disciplines are invited to join me for some fun, educational and inspiring clinics this season. Check out the many events listed on this site or visit www.heidipotter.com. Your horse will  you for it!
