NAWD ranch horse tests reflect the skills a good horse has to learn to succeed on the ranch; they include horsemanship, ranch reining and ranch trail. They incorporate lateral work, speed control, turnarounds and transitions. Engagement and softness in the bridle are rewarded. Our tests were developed by Dr. Michael Guerini, Julie Slater and Mike Marquez, three trainers with a deep connection to the cowboy community and a long history on the ranch.

Head of the Ranch Horse Program

Julie Slater has been riding horses since she was five years old and has over 30 years of horse training experience. Julie has competed and coached in the areas of Extreme Cowboy Racing, Reining, and Working Cowhorse, winning two world championships, several regional prizes, and 7 buckles at the National Western Stock Show. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, made being around horses a bit of a challenge for Jodie Pallella. Though she rode anything she could get her hands on, Jodie realized more education was still needed when she purchased a 4-year-old cutting horse as an adult.
